Travel & Transport

Melksham has a variety of transport links to and from the town and an active Transport Users Group. Wiltshire Council provides additional transport information, which can be found here.

Travelling by Bus

It is easy to travel in and around Melksham by bus. Operated by Faresaver, there are regular buses in and out of the town. In addition, National Express coaches stop on the High Street in the centre of Melksham.

There is also a Melksham Area Community Bus available for elderly and disabled people, community groups and schools. Information can be found on the Melksham Community Transport Facebook page or via the Melksham Tourist Information Centre on 01225 707424.

Concessionary bus passes are available from Wiltshire Council for free off-peak travel on local bus services between 9.30am and 11pm, Monday to Friday and all day at weekends or Bank Holidays. Apply online.

There is school transport available in certain circumstances. There is plenty of useful information on the Wiltshire Council website.

Travelling by Taxi

There are a number of local taxi firms that operate on short and long-distance journeys. The main taxi rank can be found in the Market Place, near the Town Hall with a further rank nearby in the High Street. Travelling by Train

Melksham has its own station (SN12 8BN) which provides an easy link to Chippenham station which is on the main line to Cardiff and Bristol in the west and Swindon, Reading and London in the east.  In the other direction, the Melksham line will take you to Trowbridge where you can then easily get to the south coast.

Travelling by Bicycle

There is a lot of support for cyclists in Melksham and the Town Council supports cycling within our town.  There is a free bicycle repair point outside the Town Hall and the Melksham Transport User Group provides a great deal of information for cyclists of all abilities.  A pdf of their cycle routes and information leaflet can be downloaded.

Connecting Wiltshire is trying to encourage more people to cycle, whether it be to work, school, shopping or just for leisure. Not only can it improve your health and fitness, help the environment and beat congestion, but it
can also save you money.

Travelling on foot

Walking is not only good for you, it is good for our environment, too.  The River Avon runs through Melksham and provides a beautiful landscape to walk along, especially the Millennium Riverside Walk.  There is also the Conigre Mead Nature Reserve, which is managed by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust or the community Primrose Nature Area located off Primrose Drive, SN12 6GD.  

The Kennet and Avon Canal can be accessed in nearby Semington or from the Bowerhill end of Melksham.  It is also possible to walk to local attractions such as historic Lacock, Chalfield Manor or Caen Locks.
