**Melksham Town Council Invests in Modern CCTV Infrastructure for Enhanced Safety**

Melksham Town Council is proud to announce its decision to invest in modern Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) infrastructure for the Town Centre. This significant initiative aims to create a safe environment for both residents and visitors, enhancing the overall experience of enjoying our town.

During the full Council Meeting held on Monday, March 18th, the motion to implement advanced CCTV systems in the Town Centre was passed. This decision comes as a proactive measure to address safety concerns and bolster security within the community.

The current CCTV coverage in Melksham, centered on the Market Place, is considered inadequate due to outdated equipment and limited reach. With many areas lacking coverage, Sgt Ritter of Wiltshire Police has emphasised the need for a modernised system. Currently, there are six cameras in operation within the Town Centre. However, with this investment, an additional 26 cameras will be strategically installed to provide comprehensive coverage of key areas.

Councillor Hubbard, who proposed the motion, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, "Our residents' safety is a top priority. This investment will improve our surveillance capabilities and help create a safer environment for everyone."

The proposed investment, based on recommendations from an independent consultant, offers significant cost savings by consolidating tasks. The Council’s contractors will undertake the works immediately and complete the project by May 2024, at a cost of £29,712. Funds from the existing CCTV reserve will be used, with a portion allocated for future expansions like additional coverage for the town's underpass.

Town Mayor, Cllr Simon Crundell, said "I am glad that after 16 years of planning CCTV in the town, we have taken action to provide a service that has clear support from both the police and local businesses."

This modern CCTV infrastructure represents a proactive step towards creating a safer and more secure environment for everyone in Melksham. By enhancing surveillance capabilities, the Town Council aims to deter criminal activities, reassure residents and visitors, and ultimately foster a sense of community well-being.
