Melksham Civic Awards Celebrate Outstanding Community-Minded Individuals

At the Melksham Civic Awards on Saturday 14 March, Mayor of Melksham, Councillor Saffi Rabey, celebrated this year’s winners by recognising individuals for their contributions in building a stronger community.

This year’s Civic Awards recognised individuals whose dedication, passion, and hard work positively impact the lives of local residents. Melksham’s Mayor, Councillor Saffi Rabey, announced the awards during the Mayor’s Reception.

Advocate for Vulnerable People 2026 – Carolyn Fernandes

The Advocate for Vulnerable People Award honours those who go above and beyond to protect, uplift, and champion individuals who need extra support.

This year’s award was presented to Carolyn Fernandes, in recognition of her commitment to running the Shine friendship café for adults with learning disabilities at Queensway Hall.

The Friday morning sessions welcome around 90 adults, carers, and volunteers for refreshments, karaoke, bingo and more, with quieter Friday afternoon sessions for crafts, baking and other activities. Carolyn has not only created a welcoming and joyful space, but has also empowered adults with learning disabilities by offering volunteer roles, which help build confidence and skills.

Champion for Tackling Deprivation 2026 – Wendy Isaacs

Recognising an individual whose actions have a positive community impact on those facing financial challenges, the second award of the evening was Champion for Tackling Deprivation 2026. For her work making Melksham a more equal place, the award was presented to Wendy Isaacs.

Wendy runs the Melksham Pet Food Bank, supporting people who are struggling to feed their animals. Her work helps families stay together with their pets and provides vital support to those experiencing financial challenges, making a significant contribution to reducing deprivation in the community.

Young Volunteer of the Year – Ellis Holloway

The Young Volunteer of the Year Award celebrates a young person who inspires others through their actions and community involvement. This year’s winner, Ellis Holloway, was nominated in recognition of his outstanding commitment to young people, sport, and the local community through his volunteering at The Contender Gym. Ellis has been a positive role model, demonstrating strong values in leadership, and the importance of giving back.

Ellis helps young people build confidence, discipline and respect through his support of children’s boxing classes and through leading sessions for Melksham Amateur Boxing in a safe, positive and encouraging environment.

Community Volunteer of the Year – Karen Dwyer

The final award, Community Volunteer of the Year, recognised the individual who generously dedicates their time to the community and makes a difference on the lives of those around them. Karen Dwyer was honoured for nearly 50 years of volunteering for Girl Guides, running two Rainbow and one Brownie session per week. Karen additionally spends extra weekends participating in fundraising and sleepover events.

The impact on the Girl Guides is significant from the creativity, positivity and enthusiasm brought by Karen in helping the girls to collect as many badges as they can.

A special tribute was also paid to Michael John Perrin BEM, who was a much loved member of the community and dedicated 62 years of service to Melksham Town Football Club and the wider town.
