PRESS RELEASE

18 April 2024

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

** Memorial Plaque Unveiling Ceremony to be held for local treasure Jean Harris **

A memorial plaque unveiling ceremony will be held on Saturday 27th April at 11.30am in the Queen Mary Garden in Melksham, to honour a much beloved Melksham resident, Jean Harris, who sadly passed away in April 2023.

The former Melksham Town Council Officer was also a dedicated volunteer, playing a pivotal role in making several of Melksham’s community groups and events what they are today.

She was an early supporter and organiser of the Melksham Community Hospital Fete, the Melksham Christmas Lights Group, and the Melksham Community Bus Service.

Her love of plants and flowers was also a driving force behind the Melksham Bloomers, who have carried on her legacy and passion for creating beautiful floral displays around the Town.

In January 2024, the Melksham Town Council Amenities Team planted a rare Dognose Apple Tree in the Queen Mary Garden by King George V Playing Fields, in commemoration of the work Jean did both for the Town Council and for the residents of Melksham.

Melksham Town Council Amenities Assistant Richard Collett, who arranged both the tree planting and the memorial plaque said, “Jean was a great lady with a real passion for Melksham.”

If you knew Jean and would like to attend the memorial plaque unveiling ceremony, please meet just before 11.30amon Saturday 27th April, at the Queen Mary Garden by King George V Playing Fields, Melksham.
