A brief history…
As of 2024, Melksham Town Council is 50 years old!
In 1974, West Wiltshire District Council was formed. It was made up of seven smaller urban and rural district councils, one of which was Melksham Urban District Council. These have all now disappeared, and the five Urban District Councils, including Melksham, have become the five Town Councils of West Wiltshire, which continue to this day.
The unitary authority, Wiltshire Council was formed from the merger of the County Council and four District Councils.
According to the 2021 Census, Melksham Town (not including surrounding villages) has an estimated 18,113 residents.
