Melksham Community Toilet Scheme

What is Melksham’s Community Toilet Scheme?

Melksham’s Community Toilet Scheme works alongside existing public toilets by welcoming anyone to use the toiletof participating organisations, during normal opening hours, without being required to make a purchase or be a customer. The scheme helps reduce barriers and uncertainty, raises awareness of hassle-free toilet locations, and enables visitors to plan their trips with confidence.

Who can use Melksham’s Community Toilet Scheme?

Anyone! Whether you are a resident, working in Melksham, or simply visiting. Everyone is welcome to use Melksham’s public toilets or the facilities of participating businesses.

Do I need to pay to use the facilities?

No. You do not need to make a purchase or be a customer to use the toilet facilities at participating businesses.

When are the facilities available?

Melksham Town Council public toilets in Market Place are open 25/7, while Bath Road and King George V public toilets are open 08:00 to 18:00 everyday (summer hours).

Melksham Town Hall is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:00, with closures to be expected over bank holidays.

Community toilet facilities within businesses are available during each venue’s opening hours, which may vary. Visitors are encouraged to check individual opening times, particularly on bank holidays or during seasonal changes.

I am a business. How can I get involved?

If your business allows non‑customers to use your toilet facilities, then we would love to hear from you! Joining the Community Toilet Scheme means your business will be featured on the schemes interactive map, helping people to identify accessible facilities in advance.

By taking part, you are supporting greater accessibility for parents, carers, older people, and those who may feel anxious about travelling without knowing where facilities are available. Your involvement helps reinforce Melksham as a safe, inclusive, and welcoming town for residents and visitors alike. The launch in May 2026 is just the start, and we look forward to the scheme growing.

Benefits of Melksham’s Community Toilet Scheme?

The Community Toilet Scheme benefits both visitors and the local economy by increasing footfall to businesses people may not usually visit and enabling longer trips outparticularly for those with health conditions or young children. For the public, the scheme provides clear, reliable information on where free toilet facilities are available, supporting different health concerns and making Melksham a more inclusive and accessible town for all. Participating businesses also receive promotion through their inclusion in the scheme’s assets and Melksham Town Council’s communications.

Additional Scheme Resources

Additional Resources

We understand that there are many reasons why toilet access is vitally important to some people before venturing from their homes. That is why Melksham Town Council supports initiatives which improve access to facilities across town.

Organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support and The Bladder & Bowel Community offer further resources, dedicated to helping those with medical conditions access toilets when they need them.

One resource includes the Just Can’t Wait Toilet Card, which discreetly explains that the holder has a medical condition and needs urgent access to a toilet. The card can help reduce embarrassment, confusion, and communication barriers.
