Wiltshire Search and Rescue

Wiltshire Search and Rescue exists to find high risk vulnerable and missing people. We are a voluntary specialist search team made up of 100+ members who respond across Wiltshire and the surrounding areas. We will co-ordinate and deploy our teams in a missing person search with the aim to bring them to a place of safety as soon as possible.

They are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are trained to operate across all types of terrain from the most remote areas of Salisbury Plain through to urban centres and around water. The team remain available to assist the emergency services at all times. When not on call-outs, the team trains regularly to maintain their skills and qualifications.

We are trained in search and casualty care along with a range of further skills and are called in when the emergency services need our specialist assistance. We have specialist teams such as drone, bike search, water, steep ground, search dogs and casualty carers who can be deployed as needed to assist with a search.

The Melksham Neighbourhood Policing Team

The Melksham Neighbourhood Policing Team is dedicated to serving the Melksham community, focusing on crime prevention, community engagement, and maintaining public safety. Operating under Wiltshire Police, the team collaborates closely with local authorities, businesses, and residents to address and resolve local issues.

Wiltshire police is split into ten Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs). Each NPT is led by an inspector and made up of sergeants, PCs, PCSOs and is supported by additional officers from the wider area to help serve the community and help keep you safe.

Teams work closely with local authorities, organisations, partners and residents to decide policing priorities. This helps teams find long-term solutions to local problems.

Melksham Fire Station

Located on Semington Road, Melksham Fire Station is part of DWFRS’s network of on-call stations. On-call firefighters at Melksham are local residents who provide emergency cover during agreed periods, responding to incidents such as fires, rescues, and road traffic collisions. The station plays a crucial role in the community, offering flexible contracts suitable for individuals with shift work or childcare commitments.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service

In November 2022, DWFRS announced that Melksham Fire Station was actively recruiting on-call firefighters. The recruitment drive included a ‘have a go’ event, allowing potential recruits to experience training activities and learn more about the role. The average earnings for an on-call firefighter at Melksham were reported to be around £8,000 annually, paid monthly.

However, the station has faced challenges due to staffing shortages. In one incident, a fire in Lewington Close, just 150 meters from the station, required assistance from crews in Trowbridge and Chippenham because Melksham’s on-call firefighters were unavailable. This highlights the critical need for more local recruits to ensure timely responses to emergencies.
