Council charges ahead with two new electric vehicles

The Council’s two new leased electric vehicles have now been delivered, replacing previously hired vehicles and marking an important step forward in modernising the authority’s operational fleet.

The two electric vans replace the Council’s former fleet, two of which had broken down and required repairs that were not financially viable, while a third vehicle was written off after theft‑related engine damage. As a result, the Council had recently been relying on hired vehicles to maintain the delivery of essential services. The new fleet provides a permanent, reliable solution, while leasing offers a cost‑effective and flexible approach to fleet management.

The move to electric vehicles supports the Council’s sustainability objectives by reducing carbon emissions, improving local air quality, and supporting greener day‑to‑day operations. In addition to environmental benefits, the transition will reduce fuel costs compared with diesel vehicles, supporting more efficient service delivery.

Daily vehicle inspections will be undertaken to ensure safety and operational readiness, in line with the Council’s asset management and health and safety responsibilities.

To support the new fleet, installation of on‑site EV charging points will be completed on 21 April 2026, with two charging points available.

An inventory of vehicles, including maintenance schedules, insurance, and operational readiness, will be completed as part of the Council’s upcoming relocation to the town centre. This work is essential to ensure the Council’s asset register is accurate, transparent, and fully up to date.

Councillor Adrienne Westbrook said:

“I am delighted that Melksham Town Council now have electric vehicles. Looking after the environment for the next generations has to be a very high priority. All councils must help to reduce carbon emissions, and we must be at the forefront of new modern technologies.”

The introduction of electric vehicles reflects the Council’s commitment to responsible financial management, sustainability, and the efficient delivery of services for the community.
