To celebrate Friendship Day on Thursday 30th July 2026 and support community wellbeing, Melksham Town Council is inviting warm, welcoming hospitality businesses to host a designated Friendship Table within their premises.
Friendship Day started in 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade, offering a designated moment to cherish friendships and let your friends know how much you care. In 2011, the day was internationally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly, centred around the idea that friendship can build bridges and encourage peace.
Supporting community wellbeing, Melksham Town Council will be encouraging businesses to decorate a table within their premises to make it distinguishable and host a non-pressured, inclusive environment for meeting others. A friendship table will act as a safe, friendly space where anyone can take a seat with the intention of meeting someone new. It is a simple but powerful idea designed to bring people together, spark conversations, and help build new social connections within the community.
Melksham Town Council will be spreading the word about the participating venues, celebrating businesses’ commitment to helping reduce loneliness and create new friendships. Residents will be encouraged to visit their nearest table and get involved.
A full list of participating businesses will be shared on Melksham Town Council’s communication channels in the lead up to the event. Businesses interested in hosting a Friendship Table are invited to contact Melksham Town Council’s Business Partnership Team.
Councillor, Jennie Westbrook, commented:
“International Friendship Day is a wonderful reminder of how fundamental friendship is. It’s about celebrating the friendships we already have, while also creating space for new ones to begin. With the support of our brilliant local businesses, I am proud that Melksham Town Council are championing local initiatives that encourage people to come together, spark conversations, and build lasting connections. By doing so, we are helping to build a welcoming Melksham where no one feels left out or alone.”
