Just in time for White Ribbon Day on 25 November, Melksham Town Council is proud to announce its commitment to ending violence against women and girls by signing the White Ribbon Promise.
By joining this national campaign, the Council is taking a clear stand against gender-based violence and pledging to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that allow it to persist. The White Ribbon Promise is more than symbolic—it’s a powerful call to action for individuals and communities to speak out and help build a culture of respect and equality.
The campaign encourages everyone, especially men and boys, to make a personal commitment to never use, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women. This includes calling out casual sexism, sexist jokes, and everyday actions that contribute to a culture where abuse is more likely to occur.
Councillor Andrew Griffin shared his thoughts on the pledge:
“I was fortunate to grow up in a family environment in which my parents and grandparents taught me and my two brothers to respect others, and that women and girls were to be protected from violence. When I became a parent myself, that guidance was passed down to our children, and to our grandsons and granddaughters.
Regrettably. too many others have not received or taken on that guidance, and too often we see and hear reports of violence and abuse by men against women. Even I know of some close to me who have been victims.
This must stop! Those who perpetuate abuse and misogyny must change their ways.
I am proud to make the White Ribbon Promise, and will call out and report violence and abuse if I see it.”
Melksham Town Council encourages all residents to learn more about the White Ribbon Promise and consider making their own pledge. You can find more information and sign the promise at: www.whiteribbon.org.uk/promise
